There’s a moment (often subtle, sometimes jarring!), when many women begin to feel a shift: a quiet sidelining, a creeping sense of invisibility that seems to come with age. But that same moment can also mark something far more powerful: a choice to resist. To push back. To swim against the tide.
Take the annual summer dilemma: swimwear.
It’s not just about fabric, coverage, or cut - it’s about confidence, comfort, and convention. And the unwritten rules that try to tell women over 50 what they should or shouldn’t wear.
But here’s the thing: there are no rules.
There’s no age limit on confidence. No expiry date on feeling good in your skin. And yet, how often do we hesitate? Not because we can’t, but because we’ve been conditioned to believe we shouldn’t? Whether it's a bikini, a tankini, a swimsuit, or something that shows a little more (or less), the real decision should rest on just one thing: how you feel in it.
Too often, we’re told to tone it down, cover it up, blend into the background. But choosing to show up exactly as you are - on the beach, by the pool, in midlife and beyond - can be a quietly radical act. One that says: I see myself. I am not invisible. And I am more than enough.
This isn’t about chasing youth or proving a point. It’s about rewriting the story we’ve been told for decades - that confidence, beauty, and joy have a deadline. They don’t. They never did.
So this summer, let your swimwear choice be one of freedom, not fear. Let it be an act of self-assurance. Wear what makes you feel powerful, playful, or simply at ease - whether that’s a string bikini or a one-piece with sleeves. The only thing that matters is that it’s your decision, not society’s.
Because swimming against the tide doesn’t mean making a splash. Sometimes, it simply means showing up. Unapologetically, authentically, and entirely yourself.
And that, at any age, is a beautiful thing.

Love this! I’m nearly 66 and wear a bikini on my summer holidays – always! Why should I cover up because of a number?
This is very true but some people (like me)
Worry about self image I couldn’t wear a Bikini I’d feel like everyone would be looking at my big stomach although I’m 76 I few like I shouldn’t worry about it but I do
I stick to swimming costumes but fashionable ones x
