Our mission at Studio10 has always been to empower women in midlife. We’ve worked hard to ensure that you feel seen – because that idea of invisibility, the sense that we’re being talked over, brushed aside, no longer taken seriously, can pulverise our hard-earned sense of self. Now I want to take it up a notch – because I’m not about to disappear, and nor can you.
A recent survey revealed that 60% of women feel invisible in midlife. On my off-days, I can totally relate to the fear of no longer turning heads in the street, or going unserved at the bar. But then I remember that midlife is an attitude: that of being unapologetically ourselves. I’m not prepared to shrink into the background. I want to shatter the outdated stereotypes that come with ageing and celebrate our rebellious spirit – with maximum joy.
Partly, it’s about changing the way we think. Yes, I know that the physical changes taking place can be difficult for some of us, but often it’s about how we react to that stuff, rather than the stuff itself. So try this on for size: ageing isn’t a decline, it’s a rise. We’re not fading, we’re blazing. Let’s turn those outmoded ideas on their head.
There’s much that is wonderful about midlife. Ageing is a privilege. With age, we grow in wisdom, our levels of contentment increase – and our self-esteem can rocket as a result. Let’s stop judging ourselves so harshly, take a more compassionate approach to our bodies, one that values our individual journeys and honours our authenticity. So turn up the volume, spread the word – this is sisterhood in motion. Fierce community. A generation of women showing what’s possible, together.
You, and many more of the women I know, are already challenging the established norms. You’re sending a powerful signal about how authentic beauty can transcend the strictures of age. It’s not about youth: beauty emanates from an inner sense of confidence and self-worth. That’s what makes you visible.
I’m hugely inspired by the idea of our collective power. So let’s do this together: challenge the narrative, celebrate wisdom, growth and wildness, lift each other up, and make space for radical self-love. It might be messy, and loud, but it will also be beautiful. We’ll shout louder, shine brighter – and we will never disappear.
We’re changing the face of ageing. So get on board.
