Why does my concealer crease under my eyes?

Let’s start by saying, if your concealer looks perfect for about twenty minutes and then folds itself into every line under your eye, it doesn’t mean you’re applying it wrong. You’re probably just using the wrong concealer… and possibly too much of it.

This is one of the most common frustrations we hear from women with mature skin. And luckily, it’s completely solvable, so here’s what’s going on.

Why it happens

The skin under the eye is the thinnest on the face and as skin matures, it loses some of the collagen and elasticity that kept it smooth and resilient. So that same under-eye area behaves very differently to the rest of your face, and it needs a product that understands that.

Most concealers are formulated to cover, full stop. They’re often thick, high-pigment, and designed to sit on top of skin. On mature skin — particularly around the eye — that’s a problem. Product that sits on the surface rather than working with the skin will always find the lines, as it has nowhere else to go.

Add to that the fact that hormonal changes during midlife affect skin hydration significantly. Oestrogen plays a big role in keeping skin plump and moist, and as levels shift, the under-eye area is often one of the first places to show the difference. Drier, thinner skin creases more easily, which is why a concealer that worked brilliantly a few years ago might suddenly seem to have stopped performing. Very frustrating when you’ve earned true customer loyalty status and suddenly you’ve felt a bit pushed out!

The formula fix

What the under-eye area needs is hydration built into the product itself, not just coverage applied on top of dry skin. Our Hydra-Lift Corrector Concealer is specifically designed for this: it combines corrective coverage with active hydration, so it works with the skin rather than sitting on top of it. So what you get is coverage which moves with your skin through the day rather than settling into lines as it dries out.

If you’ve been using a standard concealer under your eyes, switching to something with a hydrating, skin-caring formula is likely to make an immediate difference.

Less product, better result

It’s OK if you didn’t know this, as most people don’t: the more concealer you apply under the eye, the more likely it is to crease. A thin, well-blended layer will always outlast a heavier application. Always.

Apply a small amount (yep, less than you think you need) and blend it in with your ring finger, using a gentle tapping motion rather than rubbing. The warmth of your finger helps the product melt into the skin rather than sitting on top of it. Let it settle for thirty seconds before adding more if you need it.

If you’re setting your concealer with powder, use the smallest amount possible and apply with a damp sponge rather than a brush. Pressing powder in rather than sweeping it on makes a significant difference to how long it stays put — and avoids the chalky, cakey look that too much powder creates on mature skin.

Colour matters too

A common mistake made is reaching for a concealer that’s significantly lighter than your skin tone, the thinking being that lighter cancels out darkness. In practice, a concealer that’s more than one shade lighter than your skin will highlight the under-eye area and draw attention to texture, which tends to make lines more visible rather than less.

A shade that closely matches your skin tone, or is just one shade lighter, gives a much more natural and longer-lasting result.

The bottom line

Creasing under the eye isn’t inevitable, so please don’t feel like there’s no way out of that! It’s usually a formula problem, an application problem, or both. The right concealer, applied lightly with a tapping motion and set carefully, should stay in place comfortably through the day.

Your under-eye area deserves a product that actually understands it. This is that product.
