There's a particular kind of double-take that happens sometime in late August onwards. You catch yourself in the mirror, proper daylight, no filters, no forgiving bathroom lighting and think, “Hang on, when did that happen?” Your skin looks different. Not bad, necessarily. Just... different. And if you've been wondering whether you imagined it, you didn't.
Summer, for all its loveliness, is a lot. More sun than your skin's seen all year (*cough* five consecutive heatwaves…). More time outdoors. Flights, air conditioning, late nights, very warm ones at that. It's basically a stress test, dressed up as a holiday. So it tracks that your skin might come out the other side asking for a bit of a debrief. Such as, looking and feeling a little drier than usual, texture behaving differently under your fingers, sun marks suddenly more visible than they were in May, makeup that doesn't quite sit the way it did back in spring.
None of that means anything's gone wrong. It just means the season's changed, and your skin - quite reasonably - wants you to notice.
This shows up more and matters more on mature skin specifically. Not because anything's declined, but because skin's relationship with moisture shifts over the years, and that means it does more work to bounce back from a summer like the one you've just had. Which is exactly the thinking behind everything we make. Skincare and coverage were never supposed to be two separate jobs, especially not right now, when your skin's asking for both at once.
So what helps? Less an overhaul, more a re-introduction. Start by leading with hydration. If your base isn't quietly doing double duty as skincare, this is the month that makes the case for one that does.
Let a bit of texture be texture, rather than trying to blur your way past it; a lighter, skin-first formula like our Hydra Peptide Fusion Daily Defence SPF30 Moisturiser will always look more like you than a heavy one trying to smooth everything into submission. And if your usual products feel slightly off right now, give it a couple of weeks before deciding something needs replacing.
Remember: skin needs a moment to catch up, same as the rest of us after a long summer.
