The best mascara for thinning lashes after 40 (and how to apply it like a pro)

Let’s talk lashes.

Specifically, the kind that seem to shrink, straighten, or disappear entirely once we hit midlife. They get finer, a little straighter, a little more... shy. Some mornings it feels like they’ve packed up and gone on holiday without you.

Don’t worry — the fix is simpler (and subtler) than you might think.

Thinning lashes after 40 don’t need more drama — they just need some support. The right mascara can open your eyes, lift your entire face, and bring back that flutter you forgot you had.

So what actually works for mature lashes?

Here’s what I’ve learned (the hard way): the best mascaras in your forties aren’t just about volume. They’re about balance. You want something that gives you lift and length, doesn’t clump, and won’t flake all over your concealer.

I’m currently loving the Studio10 6-in-1 Perfect Lash Mascara — and not just because it sounds like it has a PhD in multitasking. It lengthens, lifts, defines, conditions, volumises and sets.

All in one go.

The brush is slim and precise, so it actually finds those sneaky corner lashes and gives them a proper lift.

It’s buildable, but light. You get real flutter without the weight. Like a lash lift in a tube — and no one has to know you didn't wake up like that.

But here’s the catch — application makes all the difference.

Here’s how I do it:

  1. Curl first — always. Even if you’re in a rush. One gentle press opens everything up.

  2. Wipe the wand. A clean wand gives you more control and way fewer clumps.

  3. Wiggle and sweep. Start at the base, wiggle the brush slightly as you lift up. It catches and separates better than a straight sweep.

  4. Catch the tips. A light second coat just on the ends gives you soft drama without bulk.

  5. Comb through if needed. A clean spoolie is your best friend if things get a bit too cosy.

And if you really want to lift the whole look?

Focus a little extra on the outer lashes. That subtle winged effect pulls the eyes up — no liner required.

If you’ve never tried a tubing mascara before, this is your sign. They wrap around each lash, don’t smudge, and come off with just warm water.

Just remember this — mascara after 40 isn’t about making lashes look thicker than they are.

It’s about bringing softness, structure, and light back to the eyes.
And with the right product and a few small tricks, you’ll be fluttering like it’s second nature again.

Because thinning lashes might be part of the story, sure.

But they sure as hell aren’t the headline.
