Has your skin been looking a bit, meh? You're not alone, especially this time of year. Post-summer skin is its own thing, and it needs a slightly different approach in order to work with it. So let's delve in.

What’s really going on
Sun, heat, air conditioning, late nights, disrupted routines — ahh, summer is brilliant, but it asks a lot of your skin. And for mature skin specifically, the recovery time is a little longer than it used to be. Cell turnover is slower, moisture doesn’t hold as well, and the barrier that keeps your skin looking plump and luminous needs more support than it did ten years ago.
The result is that flat, low-lit look that shows up from September onwards and refuses to budge - no matter how much foundation you put on. Which brings us to the most common mistake people make at this point.
More coverage isn’t the answer
When skin looks dull, the instinct is to reach for more product. Maybe a heavier foundation; perhaps an extra layer of concealer. But more coverage on tired, dehydrated skin doesn’t create glow… in fact, it creates weight and build-up. You end up with skin that looks covered and cakey, rather than cared for. That's not what we're after!
What post-summer skin actually needs is hydration first and coverage second. Get the skin itself in better shape, and you’ll find you need far less product to get the result you want.
Where to start
A good moisturiser is doing more work than most people give it credit for. If yours isn’t specifically formulated for mature skin, it’s probably not giving you what you need right now. Our Hydra Peptide Fusion Daily Defence SPF30 Moisturiser combines peptides, which support the skin’s natural renewal process, with the kind of barrier-strengthening hydration that actually lasts through the day. It’s the foundation your foundation needs.
From there, look at how you’re applying your base. A damp sponge rather than fingers or a brush gives a more luminous, skin-like finish — especially on mature skin where a heavy hand tends to show. And if your foundation has felt cakey or flat lately, it may simply be that the formula isn’t right for where your skin is right now. A skin-first, hydrating base changes everything.
The glow question
Glow on mature skin comes from light, not shimmer. A subtle luminising primer or highlighter (placed just at the cheekbones, a touch above the brow, the bridge of the nose) creates the impression of skin that’s awake and well. Not highlighted, alive.
That’s what we’re going for. We’re not asking for the world, right? Just skin that looks like itself again, on a really good day or after 8 hours of interrupted (yes hot flushes, we're talking to you) sleep.
One last thing
Post-summer is genuinely one of the best moments to take a look at what your skin needs right now — not in an overhaul-everything way, but in a quiet, practical way. What’s changed? What isn’t working the way it used to? A little attention goes a long way at this point in the year, and your skin will thank you for it well into winter.
Start with hydration. Go lighter with coverage than you think you need to. And give it a couple of weeks... you’ll see the difference. Thank us later.
